NTA NEET 2025 Photo Upload: Step-by-Step With Error Codes

NTA NEET 2025 photo upload errors are the most common reason candidates have to reopen their application — and unlike SSC or IBPS, the NTA portal gives you a short correction window that closes without warning. Get it right the first time.

NEET Photo Upload Error Codes and Fixes

The NTA portal displays these error messages. Here is what each means and exactly how to fix it:

"File size exceeds the maximum limit" or "File too large"
Your photo is over 200 KB. Use the tool above — enter 150 as the target KB — and re-download. 150 KB gives you a safe margin below the 200 KB limit while keeping quality high. This is the most common NEET photo error.
"Invalid file format" or "Only JPG/JPEG format allowed"
Your file is PNG, WebP, HEIC, or another non-JPEG format. Even if you rename the file to .jpg, the portal checks the actual file header. Re-save as JPEG using the tool above, which always outputs a true JPEG regardless of your input format.
"Image dimensions are too small"
Your photo's pixel dimensions are below the minimum. This happens when you upload a thumbnail or a heavily compressed image. Start from the original high-resolution photo from your phone or studio, then compress only the file size — not the pixel dimensions.
"Unable to detect face" or "Face not detected"
NTA's portal runs automatic face detection. This fails when: (a) your face is not centred, (b) the lighting is too dark or too washed out, (c) you are wearing glasses, or (d) the image quality is too low. Re-take the photo in good lighting with your face centred and glasses removed.
"File is corrupt" or "Could not read file"
The JPEG file is damaged. This often happens when you re-save a compressed image through a messaging app like WhatsApp (which re-compresses and can corrupt metadata). Re-export directly from your phone's camera roll or from the tool above, not from a WhatsApp download.
"Dimensions exceed maximum allowed"
Rare — occurs on some NTA portals when the pixel dimensions are extremely large even though the file size is within range. Upload from the tool above which normalises dimensions.

Step-by-Step NEET Photo Upload

  1. Prepare your file: Use the tool above to compress your portrait photo to 150 KB. Download the JPEG file and save it with a recognisable name like neet-photo-2025.jpg.
  2. Log in to the NTA portal at nta.ac.in and navigate to the NEET 2025 application form. Do not start a new session — use the same session you started your form in.
  3. Navigate to "Upload Documents". The photograph and signature slots are separate. Do not upload your photo in the signature slot.
  4. Upload the compressed photo. Click "Browse", select your prepared file, and wait for the portal to process it. Do not refresh the page.
  5. Check the preview. The NTA portal shows a cropped preview after upload. Your face must be clearly centred in the preview box. If it looks blurry or off-centre, your source photo quality is too low — re-take before resubmitting.
  6. Upload the signature separately. Scan your signature on white paper or photograph it clearly, then compress to 10–20 KB using the 20 KB compressor.
  7. Save and proceed. Click "Save & Next" to confirm the uploads before navigating away.

NEET vs JEE vs CUET — Photo Size Comparison

ExamPhoto size rangeSignature sizeFormat
NEET UG10–200 KB4–30 KBJPEG
JEE Main10–200 KB4–30 KBJPEG
CUET (UG/PG)10–300 KB4–30 KBJPEG
NEET PG (NBE)10–100 KB4–30 KBJPEG
NEET MDS (NBE)10–100 KB4–30 KBJPEG

Note: NEET PG and NEET MDS are conducted by NBE (National Board of Examinations) and have a tighter 100 KB limit, not 200 KB. Use 80 KB as your target for NEET PG to be safe.

Common Mistakes That Cause NEET Photo Rejection

  • Uploading PNG — Always confirm the file extension is .jpg before uploading
  • Uploading a photo of your Aadhar card photo — The Aadhaar photo is too small and low resolution; use a proper portrait photo
  • Using the same file for both photo and signature slots — They require different files with different size limits
  • WhatsApp-forwarded studio photo — WhatsApp compresses images; download from the studio's original source or use the original camera file
  • Photo with any text, border, or watermark — Studio watermarks on photos are a rejection reason
  • Coloured studio backgrounds — Blue or grey studio backgrounds that are common in India. Only plain white is accepted

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same photo for JEE Main and NEET in the same year?
Yes, if the photo was taken within 6 months of each application and meets both portals' specifications (same dimensions, white background, no glasses). Since JEE and NEET run on overlapping schedules, one recent photo usually works for both.
My NEET 2025 photo was taken in 2024 — is it valid?
It depends on the date. NTA specifies "recent photograph" — generally within 6 months of the application date. A photo from July 2024 would be borderline for a January 2025 NEET application. Use a photo taken in late 2025 or 2026 to be safe.
Can I edit my uploaded photo after submitting?
Only during the official correction window that NTA opens after the initial registration period. The window is usually 2–5 days and is announced on nta.ac.in. Outside this window, uploaded photos cannot be changed. Take care to upload correctly during the initial form filling.
The portal shows "processing" for a long time after I upload — what should I do?
This is a server-side issue, not a problem with your file. Wait 60 seconds, then check if the preview has loaded. If the page is completely frozen, refresh and log back in — your upload may have saved in the background. Do not upload the same file twice without checking.
